How to print WhatsApp messages

WhatsApp has no print button. To print a whole chat, export it from your phone, turn the export into a PDF and print the PDF. It takes a few minutes and nothing gets uploaded.

Print a whole chat, with photos and dates

  1. Export the chat from WhatsApp. On iPhone, tap the chat name and then Export chat. On Android, tap ⋮, More and Export chat. Choose With all media or Include media to keep the photos. Here is the guide with pictures.
  2. Open Amberword on your phone or computer and choose the export file. You see a free preview of your PDF straight away.
  3. Set it up for paper. Under More options, pick A4 or US Letter, and turn on Large text or Black and white, for printing if you want them.
  4. Download the PDF and print it. On a computer, open the PDF and press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac). On iPhone, tap Save PDF and choose Print in the share menu. On Android, open the PDF and look for Print in its menu.

Which style prints best

Clean uses compact lines, so a long chat takes fewer sheets. Classic keeps the chat bubbles. Book has chapters by month and large photos, for a conversation you want to keep (see how to make a book from a chat). Records numbers every message and shows the time zone. You can compare them in the preview before you pay.

Printing from a computer with WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp Web shows recent messages and loads older ones as you scroll, and it has no Export chat option. Pressing Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) on that page is an unreliable way to print a whole chat, because the result depends on what your browser has loaded and how it lays out the page. For a complete copy, export the chat from your phone as in the steps above, then print the PDF from your computer.

Printing just a few messages

For a handful of messages, take screenshots on your phone and print them as photos. If you need one period of a long chat, set From and To under Dates in Amberword, and the PDF covers only those days.

Printing the export file on its own

A chat export contains a plain text file (.txt) that you can open and print from any computer, for free. It prints as a long run of lines with no bubbles and no page numbers, and photos appear only as file names. That is enough if you only need the words.

What it costs

The preview is free for any chat, and the text PDF is free for chats of up to 500 messages. The complete PDF, with photos and all four styles, costs $9 per chat, paid once. Your browser opens the chat and makes the PDF, so your messages never reach our servers.

Turn your chat into a PDF you can print: the preview is free.
