How to make a book from a WhatsApp chat

Amberword turns a WhatsApp chat into a PDF laid out like a book, with chapters by month and large photos. You keep the PDF and print it wherever you like. We make the file: we don't print or ship books.

From chat to book

  1. Export the chat from WhatsApp. On iPhone, tap the chat name and then Export chat. On Android, tap ⋮, More and Export chat. Choose With all media or Include media to keep the photos. Here is the guide with pictures.
  2. Open Amberword on your phone or computer and choose the export file. You see a free preview straight away.
  3. Choose the Book style. Star your favourite messages in the preview and they appear on the first page.
  4. Set From and To under Dates if you want only one period, such as your first year together. You can also change the names shown in the book.
  5. Download the PDF and print it, or keep it on your phone.

Getting it printed

Pages are A4 or US Letter, which you choose under More options. A copy shop or an online printing service that accepts PDF files can print it, so ask them which bindings they offer in that size. The preview shows the page count, which is worth checking first: a long chat with photos can run to many pages, and you can shorten it with the dates. Remember that whoever prints the book can read it.

As a gift

A chat book works for an anniversary, a wedding, a new baby, or a conversation with someone you miss. Everything stays private until you decide to share it: your browser opens the chat and makes the PDF, so your messages never reach our servers.

What it costs

The preview is free for any chat. The Book style is part of the complete PDF, which costs $9 per chat, paid once. If you are making more than one, the Pack covers 3 chats for $19.
